If you find a mistake or want to add something, please let us know. The rules are subject to minor changes.

Registration and entries submitting

Competition entries are submitted via http://events.retroscene.org. If you have problems with registration, you can submit your entry via e-mail: cafedemoparty@gmail.com. The final version can also be submitted on the party place (on a CD, flash drive, etc.), but we suggest you to avoid it if possible. In any case, registration at events.retroscene.org is required!

Your entry archive should contain .nfo file with brief information about the authors and techincal info. ASCII-art is always welcomed.

General rules for all competitions

  1. The entry should not be published earlier (including social networks, other contests or previously published releases), this rule does not apply to the nominations: Game compo, CAFePARTY 2019 invitations compo, Gravedigger, BBQ compo.
  2. If your entry (i.e graphics and music) is used in demo/intro also released at this party, you can submit it as well.
  3. Entry containing personal insults, pornography or violating the laws of the Russian Federation in any way will be disqualified.
  4. Remote participation is allowed even if you are not present at the partyplace! Prizes are awarded only to participants attending at the demoparty, or their official representatives (you must specify them in the .nfo file attached to the entry). Diplomas are sent by mail.
  5. All entries will pass the minimum preselect from the organizers. Entries that have not passed the preselect will not be shown and will not be published in the results of demoparty or release packs. Authors of enties that have not passed preselect will be notified immediately after the decision.
  6. If there are less than three entries for a competition, the given compo will be combined with another closest compo, but only with authors permission.
  7. Combined nominations can be subdivided to a separate competitions if they have a sufficient amount of entries.
  8. The entry technical data, platform and information text from the "Show notes" section in .nfo file will be shown before the entry in all competitions.
  9. To resolve controversial issues, the organizers will try to contact the authors, but cannot guarantee this in case the work is submitted close to the deadline.
  10. The entry acceptance is not guaranteed if the entry was sent after the compo deadline.
  11. All entries that participated in the contests will be published on scene.org after the demo party (with the exception of commercial entried in the Game compo and all entries in the Browser Game compo). For some authors, organizers can provide 3 months to prepare a public release.
  12. Be sure to specify your contacts in the .nfo file, for communication: WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber etc. Organizers can contact you any time to resolve any issues that may occure.
  13. It is recommended to have an author's video of the entry, to make sure it will be shown correctly, it can be uploaded to YouTube / Vimeo or any other video hosting. The video should not be submitted in public access until the end of the competition. You can use the “unlisted” option to make your video private, and the link to this video should not be publicly distributed.
  14. The organizers keep the rights to make changes and clarifications to the rules within reasonable limits.

Graphic competitions

  1. Each submitted entry must have at least four intermediate stages of production. If the stages are suspected to be inconclusive, the entry may not pass the preselect.
  2. A maximum of two entries from one author in each competition is allowed.
  3. Entries will be shown without indication of the author. To avoid namevoting, don't sign your work, or there is a risk that we have to show entry with the signature removed.
  4. Each entry is shown by 30 seconds.
  5. Animation is not allowed.
  6. There are 3 groups of graphics compos: Modern, Oldschool and mixed. Only Oldschool platforms participate in Oldschool contests (see p.7), everything except Oldschool platforms participate in Modern, any platforms can participate in mixed compo.
  7. List of Oldschool graphics platforms: Atari 2600, Atari XL / XE, ZX Spectrum, Timex Computer 2048, Commodore VIC-20, Commodore 64, BK-0010 / 11M, MSX, PC CGA (320 × 200/4 colors or 640 × 200 / 2 colors), NES, Mattel Intellivision, Sharp MZ-700, Game Boy (1989), Game Boy Color, ATM turbo (standard mode, 640 × 200 high resolution mode). If your platform is not listed, please contact the organizers for approval. List of real party hardware is constantly replenished. If you can provide your own, please Contact us.
  8. Specific rules for Oldschool graphics competitions:
    • The entry must be sent in the graphic or executable format of the chosen oldschool platform.
    • It is recommended to include a PNG version without a signature in native 1x resolution minimum resoluton with aspect ratio preserved (relevant for platforms with rectangular pixels).
    • Teletext belongs to the Oldschool platforms as part of the Oldschool textmode graphics compo.
    • Usage of any platform-specific software modes for palette or resolution enhancing, macroscreens with scrolling (but not animation!), or drawing on screen border is encouraged!


Modern pixel art

The competition of modern pixel art.

  1. Any non-oldschool platforms are allowed.
  2. Copying, quoting, referencing reference is allowed.
  3. Maximum 256 colors, maximum resolution is 1024 x 1024.
  4. All reference materials (photos, video stills, reference art, etc) must be included with the entry. ATTENTION. Your entry may not pass the preselection if the references are not included.
Modern freestyle graphics

Competition of original entries made in a free style without restrictions.

  1. Any non-oldschool platforms are allowed.
  2. Copying, tracing, remake or direct copying of someone else's work or its part is prohibited.
  3. It is allowed to use any technical means for processing the components of the work as long as their authorship belongs to you personally.
  4. You can use only your own materials: sketches, photographs or 3d-models.
  5. All used materials must be attached to the entry.
Realtime freestyle graphics

Fast graphics competition with the announced theme in a free style on any platform.

  1. Any platforms and performance styles are allowed to participate in this competition.
  2. Copying, tracing, remake or direct copying of someone else's work or its part is prohibited.
  3. The theme will be announced on the event website and in the events.retroscene.org system according to the schedule.
  4. The announcement of the theme of compo and the deadline for the entries is defined by the schedule.
  5. Stages of picture must be available upon request to resolve disputed cases.

Fake game screenshot

You need to draw a screenshot from a game that does not exist on any platform.

  1. Any platforms and performance styles are allowed to participate in this competition.
  2. Allowed any frames from the game - screensavers, menu screens, screenshots of gameplay, etc.
  3. Copying, quoting, referencing reference is allowed.

Oldschool pixel art (Combined)

Competition of any work performed in any technique and any style within the technical limitations of the chosen retro platform.

  1. Copying, quoting, referencing reference is allowed.
  2. The use of any technical means for processing components of the work is allowed.
  3. All reference materials (photos, video stills, reference art, etc) must be included with the entry. ATTENTION. Your entry may not pass the preselection if the references are not included.
Oldschool freestyle graphics (Combined)

Competition of completely original works, performed in any technique and any style within the technical limitations of the chosen retro platform.

  1. Copying, tracing, remake or direct copying of someone else's work or its part is prohibited.
  2. It is allowed to use any technical means for processing the components of the work as long as their authorship belongs to you personally.
  3. You can use only your own materials: sketches, photographs or 3d-models.
  4. Materials used must be attached to the entry and will be published only by direct permission of the author.

Oldschool textmode graphics (Combined)

Contest of graphic works in various text modes ANSI, ASCII, PETSCII, SPECSCII, ATASCII, Teletext graphics.

  1. Only the standard color palette allowed by the selected default mode is allowed.
  2. ANSI: 80 characters wide, height unlimited.
  3. ASCII: 80 characters wide, height unlimited.
  4. Width PETSCII works: 40 characters, height is unlimited.
  5. Width SPECSCII works: 32 characters, height is unlimited.
  6. ATASCII works width: 40 characters, height unlimited.
  7. Teletext: Allowed to use Teletext level 1: 40 characters in width.
Realtime ZX Spectrum lowres graphics

Fast graphics competition for the ZX Spectrum on a given topic in one of three proposed formats for low resolution. (The topic will be published on October 25th.)

  1. You can do the work in an online or offline editor.
  2. Formats involved in the competition:
    • Attribute graphics ZX Spectrum - 32 x 24 x 53 colors. Online editor: http://53c.verve.space/
    • Stellar mode graphics ZX Spectrum - 64 x 48. Any editor of your choice. For example, an online editor: http://irrlichtproject.de/stellarpaint/
    • Lowres ZX Spectrum gigascreen 64 x 48 graphics. Any editor of your choice (for example Multiartist).
  3. The theme will be announced on the event website and in the events.retroscene.org system according to the schedule.
  4. The announcement of the theme of compo and the deadline for the entries is defined by the schedule.
  5. Stages of picture must be available upon request to resolve disputed cases.
  6. Please note that entries drawn in online editors will be shown in native formats for the ZX Spectrum.

Music competitions

Tracked music
  1. Maximum file size is 4 MB.
  2. Maximum duration is 3 minutes.
  3. Allowed formats are MOD, S3M, XM, IT, XRNS, Sunvox.
  4. External plugins are not allowed.
  5. Internal effects (Impulse Tracker DMO, Renoise, Sunvox) are allowed.
  6. Maximum 2 entries per author.
Oldschool music (AY 3-8910 (YM2149F), TS, Beeper, SID, etc ...)
  1. Maximum file size is 64 Kb.
  2. Maximum duration is 3 minutes.
  3. Entry must be in native editor format with the player.
  4. Maximum 2 entries per author.
  5. Your entry must be original and not released before, covers/remixes are not allowed.
30 sec MP3 / OGG music
  1. Maximum bitrate is 320 kbps.
  2. Maximum duration is 30 seconds
  3. Maximum 2 entries per author.
  4. Your entry must be original and not released before, covers/remixes are not allowed.
Realtime music compo

You need to make a full-fledged track based on given fragment, which will be published at October 25th

  1. Maximum duration is 3 minutes.
  2. Maximum 2 entries per author.
  3. You can use any tools and platforms for making your track.
  4. If your entry is for oldschool platform, then:
    • Maximum file size is 64 Kb.
    • Entry must be in native editor format with the player.

Demo / Intro

One scene compo

If you are completely new to demo coding, or don’t have the time to make a full-fledged demo, or if you just want to show your skills, then this compo is for you!

  1. Your entry should contain only one scene - it can be either one effect, or several effects in same environment with same theme or meaning.
  2. Maximum duration is 1 minute.
  3. There are no restrictions on the platform, format and size. If special equipment is required, please bring it with you and contact us.
  4. The theme for the compo is "RESURRECTION" (Renaissance)
  5. In this competition, the spectacular performance within the time limit is estimated - 1 minute maximum.
  6. You can use any demotools or game engines (tooll, vvvv, cables.gl, Unity, Unreal, Processing, etc), and of course nobody restricts you to code entry by yourself.
  7. If these rules are too limiting to develop your ideas, you may need to take part in another competition - Demo or Intro.
1k procedural graphics (Combined)

The graphics generated by the program in the process using various algorithms.

  1. Any platform is allowed.
  2. Maximum executable code block size is 1024 bytes
  3. Any programming language.
  4. Final result must be a static picture. Scrolling is allowed if the picture is placed on several screens. Any software modes are allowed as well (gigascreen, multicolor, etc.)
  5. If precalcualtion takes too much time, the entry may be shown fast-forward, from video record or PNG file.
Amiga Demo / Intro (Combined)

Entries for Amiga or AmigaOS-compatible computers with OCS/ECS/AGA and RTG chipsets.

  1. For A1200 entries, AmigaOS 3.1, SetPatch 43.6, AHI are installed, no components from AmigaOS 3.5 or 3.9 are provided
  2. All custom libraries have to be delivered with the demo/intro and have to reside in the demo/intro directory.
  3. Your entry must exit to the system by pressing LMB/RMB or ESC.
  4. Floppy disk images (ADF, DMS) are allowed.
  5. Entry must be packed in lha, lzx or zip archive.
  6. Changing video resolution during entry running is highly undesirable.
  7. Maximum show time is 10 minutes (including precalculation).

Commodore 64 Demo / Intro (Combined)

Entries for Commodore 64, 128, Plus/4...

  1. Entries must be provided as executable files (.PRG) or disk image (.D64). For size-limited entries only .PRG is allowed, which size is limited respectably. .PRG entries will be run via LOAD “filename”,8,1 and RUN, .D64 - via LOAD “*”,8,1 and RUN
  2. Demos can request user to change/turn disk, while intros can't.
  3. Maximum show time is 10 minutes (including precalculation).

ZX Spectrum 256b Intro
  1. Maximum executable file size is 256 bytes (not including loader).
  2. Loader should not contain additional data and can't perform any actions other than loading and running the intro.
  3. Your entry must run on at least one of compo machines (see equipment list).
  4. Maximum show time is 3 minutes (including precalculation).
ZX Spectrum 4k Intro
  1. Maximum executable file size is 4096 bytes (not including loader).
  2. Loader should not contain additional data and can't perform any actions other than loading and running the intro.
  3. Your entry must run on at least one of compo machines (see equipment list).
  4. Maximum show time is 10 minutes (including precalculation).
ZX Spectrum Demo
  1. Maximum file size is unlimited.
  2. Your entry must run on at least one of compo machines (see equipment list).
  3. Maximum show time is 10 minutes (including precalculation).
  4. If Demo does not have an explicit ending, then the author must indicate at what point entry can be interrupted.
ZX-Enhanced Demo / Intro (Combined)
  1. Your entry should work on ZX-Evolution BaseConf or TS-Conf, or other enhanced ZX machines: Uno, Next, SE(Chloe), etc.
  2. Your demo must use enhanced capabilities of used platform (enhanced memory/graphics, etc) and should not run on classic ZX Spectrum 48/128/+2, otherwise the organizers reserve the right to move your entry to regular ZX Demo compo.
  3. Maximum show time is 10 minutes (including precalculation).
  4. If the entry does not have an explicit ending, then the author must indicate at what point the show can be interrupted.
BK 0010-01, 0011M 512b intro
  1. Maximum file size is 512 bytes.
  2. Preferably, a .bin file or disk image in MK-DOS format (on a .bkd or .img image). If you need another OS to start, you must explicitly report this in the .nfo file.
  3. Maximum show time is 3 minutes (including precalculation).
  4. Turbo mode (6 MHz) is allowed.
  5. It is allowed to use ROM data and Additional RAM (SMK).
BK 0010-01, 0011M Demo
  1. Maximum file size is unlimited.
  2. Preferably files in the MK-DOS disk format (on the .bkd or .img image). If another OS or your image with your autoloader is needed to start, you must explicitly report this in the .nfo file.
  3. Maximum show time is 10 minutes (including precalculation).
  4. If Demo does not have an explicit ending, then the author must indicate at what point entry can be interrupted.
  5. It is allowed to use the “turbo” mode 6Mhz and Additional RAM (SMK).

"Newskool" 256b Intro

Allowed platforms are Modern PC (Mac/PC/Linux), consoles of 5th generation or higher and browsers.

  1. Maximum file size is 256 bytes.
  2. Maximum show time is 3 minutes (including precalculation).
  3. You should include a .bat file for configuring and running DOSBox (or other DOS emulator) in fullscreen mode with necessary parameters.
"Newskool" Demo

Allowed platforms are Modern PC (Mac/PC/Linux), consoles of 5th generation or higher and browsers.

  1. Recommended resolutions: 640×480 (4:3), 1024×768 (4:3), 1280×720 (16:9) и 1920×1080 (16:9) 60Hz.
  2. Your entry must exit by pressing ESC or any other system button.
  3. For Mac/PC/Linux: if your entry requires additional environment (SDK, drivers, etc.), contact organizers in advance and make sure that is can be installed compo machines. For Linux, .sh script for configuring environment is recommended.
  4. For Mac/PC/Linux: make sure your entry correctly runs on secondary monitor (the beamer will act as it).
  5. For browsers: only WebGL entries are allowed. Entries will be run locally (Chrome with "--allow-file-access-from-files" option). Additional plugins like Flash, Silverlight, AdobeAir are not allowed. Please specify recommended browser/OS version in .nfo file!
  6. Your entry can not download any data from the Internet, if it's required, then it should be submitted to Wild compo.
Console Demo / Intro (Combined)

Allowed platforms are consoles up to and including fourth generation: Mega Drive (Genesis), Super NES, Neo Geo, Famicom/NES, Atari 2600 and others; also entries for "fantasy consoles" such as PICO-8 and TIC-80 are allowed.

  1. You must provide a hardware or configured emulator for running your entry.
  2. Maximum show time is 10 minutes (including precalculation).
Other platforms Demo / Intro (Combined)

Any Demo / Intro for computers and platforms that are not included in previous competitions.

GameDev competitions

Game compo (Combined)

Any platforms (except browsers, they have a separate compo) are allowed. You can submit a playable unfinished or beta version. All rights for the game are reserved by the authors. Commercial games are allowed, in this case only submitted demo version will be spread by the organizers. You have 15 minutes to present your game.

Browser Game compo (Sponsor nomination)

Prize pool is 140 000 RUB (~$2100)You need to make a finished game of any genre, free from copyrights, for modern Web platforms.

  1. Your game should run on all popular browsers from at least 2017 year to recent versions.
  2. You can use any programming languages and tools suitable for web games development.
  3. You have 7 minutes to present your game.
  4. Learn more about the Browser Game compo contest.

Special events

CAFePARTY 2019 invitations compo

Any platforms and types (demo intro, wild, graphics music etc..) are allowed. Your entry must be «CAFePARTY» themed, and must have been shown on any preceeding demoparty (before October 25). If your entry makes top-3 in compo, you will get free VIP-ticket. You can watch previously released entries on special youtube playlist.Also, you'll need a archive with logos (eps, png, psd, scr, etc.)

Gravedigger

Black Raven 3, Shock Megademo for Amiga, DOOM for AOH...each of us have enough unfinished works form the past... Time to blow the dust and dig your old archives and show your past stuff! Unfinished demos, game engines, tools, hardware stuff - everything is allowed.You have a chance to participate in the competition, show the project to nonrandom viewers and even perpetuate your name and your efforts in online stream.

You need to make a text file (max 600 chars) with short summary and history of your entry, plus the files for demonstration on big screen in any format - executables, video, slideshow, etc. You can also bring yourself on the stage and make a speech about your work! You have 15 minutes for presentation.

Shadershow compo
  1. Each match lasts 25 minutes.
  2. The winner of each match is determined by the audience immediately after the competition.
  3. For the competition, both participants receive identical PCs. Only Bonzomatic is allowed, any usage of other software as well as mobile phones, notepads, cheatsheets is prohibited.
  4. You are allowed to bring your own keyboard and redefine copy/cut/paste/language switch combinations.
  5. The competition is held on the Olympic system. The draw is closed - at the discretion of the organizers. You need to sign up for the competition until 10/22/2019 by writing to cafedemoparty@gmail.com with the "Shadershow compo" topic.
Animation / Video

Any video materials are allowed: 3D / 2D animation, video clips, plots, short films, etc.

  1. Recommended resolutions: 1280 × 720 and 1920 × 1080 (16: 9) 60Hz. AVI, MPG or MP4 format, MPEG1, MPEG2 or MPEG4 video codecs (XVid / DivX / H.264), MP3 or AAC audio codecs.
  2. Maximum show time is 10 minutes.
Wild

Any entry that doesn't fall into other competitions is allowed here! Pre-registration is required! Maximum show time is 10 minutes.

BBQ compo

Kebabs !! 3 braziers. 6 participants. The same set of products. Limited time. Weapons of your choice: skewer or lattice. Fight!

The winner is chosen by the most exquisite jury - hungry viewers!
